Written anonymously, The Cloud of Unknowing is a treatise which discusses the human soul, and how God interacts with it to form each person's spiritual journey.
A manual of prayer and God split into seventy-five short chapters, this book is intended to be read slowly, so that the author's comprehension is maximized. First written in Middle English during the 15th century, the words are archaic but made comprehensible by author Evelyn Underhill, who performed edits upon the original text in the early 20th century.
Unusually for the period, this treatise is imbued with plentiful good humor and a gentle tone. The author does not seek to preach oppressively or with threats of damnation, but instead offers readers a relaxed, thoughtful yet devoted manual of faith and advice on living a joyous, spiritually mindful life. Although the book is old, the wisdom and guidance it offers is imbued with timelessness.
Evelyn Underhill - an author who wrote extensively on the subjects of mysticism and spiritual experiences - was fascinated by this surviving work of the late Middle Ages. It was apparently written as private advice between a pupil and master, and was not intended for wide publication. Underhill explains her affinity to this text in her introduction, identifying it as a prime example of Christian mysticism, and noting past examples wherein mystics and spiritualists have influenced Christianity.

As this is a more nearly modern form of writing, I gave this copy to a neighbor who is Catholic but has, to my knowledge, no formal study in theology nor in old English writings.Thank you

Just name a mood, a challenge, a joy or an ambition in your life and this book has the answer in scripture. So helpful, so inspiring, so comforting.
Early Christian mysticism is some very strange stuff. This is a new interpretation of the 14th-Century work.
In places this is rather heavy going, and I can't say I'm certain I got the gist, but as far as a skull-buster goes, Mr. Progoff's translation and interpretation affords fertile fields for speculation and debate. Some of the things he discusses are in some sense disturbing.
I like that. Maybe you will too -- but prepared to work more than a little to get there.
No issues
A good read for someone moving into a more contemplative prayer life or trying to understand what contemplation is really about
I can't comment on the book's content as I have yet to read it, but it is exactly what I expected. It was recommended to me by a theologian I respect and has found a spot among the shelves of my theology books waiting its turn to be digested by someone who specifically sought it out.
I wish someone could translate this into good, ordinary English. This particular edition was just too archaic for easy, thoughtful reading. I'm sorry I ordered and wouldn't recommend it to anyone who is really interested in it.
Ira Progoff, a student of Jung's, brings his incisive knowledge and his gentle spirit to his version of this medieval text. Progoff's introduction is a valuable addition to The Cloud of Unknowing -- a gentle book that is still very relative to contemporary life, despite its age.
As this is a more nearly modern form of writing, I gave this copy to a neighbor who is Catholic but has, to my knowledge, no formal study in theology nor in old English writings.
Thank you
